Somatic Therapy
Cultivating A Mind Body Connection…
Discover Healing Through Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy is a holistic approach to counselling that recognises the intricate connection between the mind and body in emotional healing. The word somatics comes from the Greek word soma, which means "the living body in its wholeness." Somatic therapy acknowledges that emotional distress and trauma can manifest physically in the body.
For me, somatic therapy was the missing link. Talking therapy creates awareness, but it can keep us in our minds, stuck in stories without fully processing what we feel. Yet, we don’t just think our emotions, we experience them in our bodies. By working directly with the body, somatics helps us access the feelings beneath the narratives, allowing us to release what is stored rather than just understand it. This deep mind-body connection is where true healing happens.
How Does Somatic Therapy Work?
Somatic therapy isn’t about movement or exercises, it’s an integrated part of my talking therapy approach, available both in person and online. As we explore your thoughts and emotions, I guide you to notice subtle sensations in your body, uch as tension, shifts in breath, or other physical responses, helping you tune in and listen to what your body is communicating.
By bringing awareness to these bodily experiences, we can access deeper layers of emotional and psychological understanding, often bypassing the limitations of verbal communication alone. This gentle process helps release stored patterns, bringing clarity, healing, and a greater sense of ease.
Key Principles of Somatic Therapy
Mind-Body Connection: Somatic therapy acknowledges that unresolved emotional experiences can become stored in the body, leading to physical tension, discomfort, and illness.
Conscious Awareness: Tuning into sensations, breath, and movement can access the subconscious and bring it into conscious awareness. By listening to the body’s cues rather than overriding them with thought, we uncover what has been suppressed, allowing for deeper healing and integration.
Trauma-Informed Approach: I am trained to recognise and address the symptoms of trauma, helping you process and release stored trauma from the body in a safe and supportive environment.
Embodied Presence: Through somatic therapy, you learn to cultivate a greater sense of self-awareness and embodiment, reconnecting with your physical sensations and inner wisdom.
Benefits of Somatic Therapy
Holistic Healing: Somatic therapy offers a holistic approach to healing that integrates body, mind, and spirit.
Trauma Resolution: Somatic therapy can be particularly effective in resolving trauma symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Increased Self-Awareness: Clients often report increased self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience through somatic therapy practices.
Enhanced Well-being: By releasing physical tension and emotional blockages, somatic therapy can promote overall well-being and vitality.
Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?
If you feel stuck in patterns that seem impossible to change, overwhelmed by emotions, or disconnected from yourself, somatic therapy may offer the missing piece. It’s especially beneficial if you’ve tried traditional talking therapy but still feel trapped in your thoughts or stories.
Somatic therapy can support you if you’re navigating trauma, anxiety, or stress, or if you struggle with feeling numb, dissociated, or disconnected from your body. It helps bring awareness to the subconscious patterns stored in the body, allowing for deep healing and transformation.
If you're seeking a deeper understanding of yourself and a way to truly feel change rather than just think about it, I’m here to support you on your journey toward greater wholeness and well-being.
